Reading Are Online Hotel Reviews Reliable?
3.
“Outstanding4 service…excellent food…great prices…” When you read areview like this, think twice before booking a room. It just might have beenwritten by – the hotel’s owner! The Sunday Times recently reported that some hotels try to improve their online rating5 by writing fake reviews. By the way: bad reviews cannot be trusted either, as some hotels post negative6 comments about their competitors.
4.
Does this mean that all online reviews are useless? Not necessarily. Somewebsites only allow comments from people who have used their services tobook – and pay for – a hotel room. Although this does not make faking areview impossible, it does make it very expensive.
5.
The bottom line is to remember that any review is a personal opinion. Furthermore,7 it is an opinion about an experience at one point in time. The hotel’s service may have improved – or declined8 – since the comment was written. The best way to find a good hotel is to use as many different sources9 of information as possible – and that might include buying a guidebook in a bookstore.
