ReadingWhat Language in Advertising?
3.
The study found that for local companies, the use of language didn’t make any difference. The impact on consumers was the same. It didn’t matter whether the advertising message was in Hindi or in English.
4.
For multinational6 companies, however, the findings were different. Using the local language Hindi created a feeling of closeness that made more consumers want to buy everyday products like soap or toothpaste. For this type of product, Hindi was the better language to use. However, if the company was selling luxury7 products, such as cars, watches, or even chocolate, an advertising message in English was more effective. The use of the international language English made the product seem more valuable.
5.
The study concludes8 that it is worthwhile9 for multinational companies to think carefully about their choice of language in India. For some products, using the local language may be successful, but for others, it could mean losing sales.
